The Biggest Chinese New Year Party in WA

On 19 Feb 2010, the brilliance of fireworks lit up the sky at Gloucester Park.  It was the biggest ever Year of the Tiger celebration in WA, attended by an estimated 10,000 West Australians of all races. The Chinese New Year Fireworks Night was staged by Gloucester Park, assisted by Australia Asia Business Weekly, and sponsored by Global Finance Insurance Broking.  On offer were free admissions to the Park where there were 10 exciting harness races, free children’s games, Chinatown stalls including food, fortune telling, massage, Chinese medicine, Chinese art and craft and accessories stalls, God of Fortune giving away red packets, Chinese cultural entertainment, and the highlight of the night, the 2010 Miss Chinese WA Pageant presented by Australia Asia Business Weekly and sponsored by Central Equity, and supported by Gloucester Park and Global Insurance Broking.
Miss Marlene Lim from Malaysia was crowned 2010 Miss Chinese WA.  Equal runner-ups were Arnina Moore and Joanna Hu, both from China. Winky Yu from Hong Kong was voted by the audience as Miss Popular and Hui Lin Tan from Malaysia was elected by 14 fellow finalists as Miss Congeniality.
Honourable judges comprised Deputy Chinese Consul General Ms Zhang Hong, Malaysian Vice Consul Mr Mohamad Zam Zami , Senior Vice President Betty Lai of the Christmas Islanders and Friends Association, Glenn Simpson, Managing Director of Global Insurance Broking and Des Parr, Vice Chairman, WA Trotting Association.
Apart from Consul General Mr Li Shugang, the VIP guests included former Ministers Mr Tony McRae and Mr Clive Brown who is also the chairman of Christmas Island Phosphates, Mr Lai Ah Hong, Managing Director of Christmas Island Phosphates, Mr Cheng Hang OAM, President of Christmas Islanders and Friends Association.
The audience were thrilled by many cultural performances including the skit “2010 Miss Chinese WA Wester Edition” in Mandarin presented by non Chinese students from the Confucius Institute of the University of WA, dances including “Beijing Opera” by Mulan Culture and Arts Association, and Chinese New Year songs by Linda Tang and company.  The refreshing “Cocobutter” fashion show, by budding designer Lai Ming Yek, was very popular with the audience.
Other sponsors of the Chinese New Year Fireworks Night and 2010 Miss Chinese WA were Point 88, Four Seasons Roasting Duck Restaurant, Dene Selby, Massage Point, Esther’s Cake Shop, South Ocean Chinese Restaurant, Pro Hair Studio, Aus World Travel, Chinese Therapy Clinic, Motives by Loren Ridinger Makeup Artists including Lesley Wong, Emily Lai, Ruby Wong & Faline Loon and their assistants, Mr Ma Xiaodong, Kelvin Lai, Fada and AuPeople.
