Malaysian born Bee Lee Tan descends from a Nyonya family of exceptionally good cooks. She has learned her Penang Nyonya Cuisine from early childhood and has been teaching the art of Nyonya cuisine for more than 20 years worldwide.
Bee Lee’s first cookbook, Penang Nyonya Cuisine- Hawker Delights, met with much acclaim and has brought her recipes and culinary skills into the kitchen of both Western and Asian homes. Now, hot on the heels of that first book, Bee Lee’s second book, Penang Authentic Nyonya Cuisine - Mother’s Recipes, presents to the readers more than a hundred traditional and authentic Nyonya recipes- with meticulous attention to detail.
Bee Lee frequently visits Penang and Kedah, her birth place, to research family recipes, many of which are 3 to 4 generations.  Her pursuits have produced highly interesting results.
Bee Lee Tan has conducted master cooking classes at Beaconsfield, Fremantle. She used to own a Nyonya restaurant in Mindarie. Bee Lee was a guest cook in Spice Garden in Penang. She represented the Penang Team in the Baba Convention in Singapore and cooked at the SMU. She conducts a class in UWA and has ongoing cooking classes in a Melbourne cooking school.
Bee Lee was featured in the SBS cooking show- Food Lover’s Guide to Australia. She ahs been featured in Kwong Wah Yit Poh, the local daily, in Penang and Australia Asia Business Weekly in WA, and currently is sharing her recipes each week in the same paper.
The good news for those yearning to learn from the Nyonya food master is that she will be conducting a cooking class in the Paz Café, West Perth, for beginners on 21st Jan 2011 Friday 6.30pm-8.30pm.
Students will be given basic cooking hints, make simple curry ingredients and learn how to make mouth watering sauces hands on and get to taste your own cooking.
Students will receive an autographed copy of Penang Authentic Nyonya Cuisine - Mother’s Recipes to take home. She refers to the book throughout the class, making it a ‘working’ text in your own kitchen.
The second class will be on 22nd Jan 2011 Sat 2-4pm.
This will be the 1st time in Perth where traditional Chinese New Year dishes are revealed to participants.  Students take an autographed copy of the cook book home as well. Traditional Chinese New Year customs, culture and dishes will be discussed.  All participants will join in for Chinese New Year dinner cooked by themselves.
Paz Cafe has a modern décor and  free parking on the street are available during classes. Coffee, tea, cakes and juices and soft drinks are available at own cost.
Places are limited in both classes. If you don’t want to miss this golden opportunity, register with Bee Lee today by emailing her at beelee@live.com.au.
